A Mod Nod to Pan-Asian Fare

Austin Powers would love Asia Nine.

The flashy interior of the nearly 300-seat Pan-Asian restaurant in Penn Quarter features splashes of glass tiles, a bright red sushi bar, a steel “waterfall” by the bar and bright colors on almost every wall.

The menu nods to Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean cuisines. There’s Tom Yum, the aromatic Thai lemongrass soup, Japanese sushi, steamed Chinese dumplings, vegetables wrapped in thin Vietnamese rice paper for the Garden Rolls and sizzling strips of steak served with a tangy Korean barbeque sauce.

Mixed into the traditional Asian dishes are playful combinations. The sushi list – with its Biden Vice Presidential Roll of crab meat, cucumber, pickled ginger and chili bean sauce and Seafood Dynamite Roll that’s topped with a scallop, shrimp, and crab mixture – is particularly creative.

Throw in strong cocktails, including several in neon shades of pink and blue, and one thing is clear…

It’s groovy, baby. Yeah.
