There aren’t many places that offer live piano these days, but visitors here are in for a musical treat most nights of the week. On Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, diners enjoy tunes from former White House pianist Bob Smith. On Thursdays, things get a little wilder when pianist Pat Rohrer shares the limelight with anyone who wants to accompany her by singing along. She starts at 8pm and takes requests.
One of our favorite things about Old Town is its marriage of Colonial charm and modern niceties, and the Grille at Morrison House doesn’t disappoint in this regard. The romantic double staircase surrounding a fountain out front is the first tip off of the refinement inside. Indeed, elegant moldings, bold orange walls and opulent artwork and light fixtures will impress any dining companion, from dates to bosses to future in-laws.

While the leather-bound wine list has plenty to recommend in it, wine buyer Rosen Ivanov knows how to make cleverly crafted cocktails, too. Start off with the intensely pear-flavored Grill Anjou Cocktail, a mix of pear vodka, muddled pair, lime juice, sage and ginger ale, or the Sweet Thyme, a combo of gin, thyme syrup, lemon juice, frothy egg white and a splash of club soda -- which tastes like creamy pineapple juice.

Full Overview
Whether you’re looking for an intimate, white-tablecloth dinner or you’re up for a clubby, piano-enhanced experience, The Grille at Morrison House has got you covered. The Kimpton hotel’s formal dining room offers nine tables in a quieter setting and has a fancier chef’s menu to match. Down the hall is the classic piano bar with a more casual, bistro-inspired menu, although the chef’s tasting menu can be ordered here as well.
Since they share the same name and the same kitchen, manager Dan Underwood admits it can get tricky when people make reservations. “A lot of times when people book online, they make a note of where they would like to be. And at the host area, we ask them if they have a preference,” he says.
Chef Brian McPherson brings to the table his experience at Poste Moderne Brasserie in Penn Quarter, another Kimpton restaurant where he transferred from last fall. He does well in his preparations of fish, including an olive oil-poached wild Alaskan king salmon and daily specials such as a recent offering of luscious, crispy-skinned sablefish. He also favors vinegar and wine reductions, which make appearances on many dishes—including desserts, where a balsamic reduction cuts the richness of his buttery apricot pudding cake.
