Brick Oven Pizza in the Heart of the City

Highlights

  • The restaurant’s house-made, fruit-infused vodkas are great in a cocktail and are even better on the rocks.
  • Most restaurants make you order onion straws as a separate side for a burger, but not Matchbox. Onion straws come on the 3.6.9 Mini-burgers.
  • It’s not all pizza and sliders here; on weekends the restaurant serves brunch, including a skillet of buttery, gooey cinnamon rolls.

Good to Know

  • The small street-facing patio is well-shielded from the noise of passersby with a gate and plenty of vegetation.
  • Want your pizza to go? You can order online and your meal will be ready for pick-up upon arrival.
  • The restaurant prides itself on a number of green-focused initiatives, including everything from using sustainable building materials to a relationship with UNICEF to provide potable water to children globally.

Full Overview

Originally in a space that was once a Chinese grocery store, owners of Matchbox, a self-described “vintage pizza bistro,” had their work cut out for them as they set out to develop a funky, vintage- inspired spot in the heart of DC’s Chinatown neighborhood. Exposed brick walls and an industrial-but-cozy dining room feature booths and tables that are embedded with vintage matchboxes of all themes and varieties are just some of the details that make Matchbox a fun spot to gather. A popular spot for young professionals and hungry visitors to the area, it’s no surprise that Matchbox’s shotgun bar hosts a vibrant after-work scene offering more than 10 beers on tap and nearly 20 house-crafted cocktails. Perpetually on the beverage menu are the house-made, fruit-infused vodkas, which can be spotted steeping above the bar in large pitchers. The menu features heavy appetizers for the crowd at the bar, classic and inventive pizza pies for casual dinners and bistro-inspired entrees if you’re up for a more formal dinner. Whether you go for juicy, onion straw-topped mini burgers or a Fire & Smoke Pizza (roasted red peppers, chipotle peppers and gouda all crisped to perfection in a wood-fire oven), this pizza place feels like a favorite neighborhood spot, even if it’s not in your neighborhood.
