Craft Cocktails in an Old Town Speakeasy
Highlights
- You can order off the cocktail menu, but putting yourself in the hands of your bartender is welcomed.
- The cocktail menu changes weekly, so something like the Gazpacho drink (an actual gazpacho soup strained through super fine cloth) won’t always be available.
Good to Know
- You won’t see a giant sign proclaiming “PX” outside their door. Look for the blue light, it marks the spot.
- While nibbles are offered, the emphasis here is cocktails. If you’re planning on trying a little bit of everything, which is recommended, it’s probably not recommended to come with an empty stomach.
- Chatting up the bartender yields interesting stories about cocktails and their names – don’t hesitate to ask the history of something or how it came about.

Cocktailing is on the rise in DC, and the medium for this movement is the speakeasy. Todd Thrasher’s PX, nestled above the hustle and bustle of Old Town Alexandria’s cobblestoned streets, is the ultimate expression of the genre.
When you arrive at the corner of Columbus and King Street, the only sign that you’re at the right place is a blue light glowing next to an inconspicuous door. A buzz of the doorbell, and the greeter opens a small window within the door to check you out. Reservation? You’re in. If not, you’ll have to hope you’ll pass muster and that the 38-seat lounge has a spot for you.
Votive candles line the stairs up to the bar where velvet chairs and settees are artfully arranged for small parties and intimate conversation. A seasonal cocktail menu changes weekly and features the fruits and vegetables (yes, vegetables) that are found at local farmers markets.
Clinton Terry, Thrasher’s partner in cocktailing crime, is an avid farmers market fan and hits four or five of them a week to collect local herbs, fruits and veggies for drinks. He believes that, “you want to buy from someone not somewhere,” making the ingredients an element of drink mixing that they’re proud of.
Some could say it is the great attention they pay to detail that makes PX’s drinks so special, but they are equal parts passionate and obsessive about their craft as well.
