Perched halfway between Central Park and the boutiques of Madison Avenue, Bistro Chat Noir is a New York minute from the Champs-Élysées.
The restaurant looks the part inside and out. In front, plants separate tiny tables from the sidewalk. Inside, the dining room -- which occupies the ground floor of an Upper East Side townhouse -- holds crimson banquettes, Impressionist-style art, crisp white tablecloths and arrangements of fresh flowers.
Order the fluffy goat cheese cheese or dark chocolate soufflé when you place entrée orders. The dishes take 30 minutes to prepare and are well worth the wait.
The Black Cat Burger is one of the best in the neighborhood. Order it with the works to have the thick grass-fed beef patty topped with strips of bacon, grilled onions and bleu cheese.
Good to Know
Be sure to check the specials. The chef prepares ultra-seasonal dishes and adds new options frequently.
The kitchen serves a three-course prix-fixe menu from 5 to 7pm and again from 9 to 11pm. The choices include salad or gazpacho, poached salmon or rigatoni and a Floating Island dessert.

Full Overview
Steak tartare is a Francophile’s ideal of finely chopped raw steak, egg, onions, capers and sliced cornichons, with a tickle of spice from hot sauce. The marinated hanger steak, which comes with sautéed spinach, fries and creamy béarnaise sauce, is an instant trip to the clattering dining rooms of the Left Bank.
The kitchen also borrows one of Italy’s best treasures, adding truffles to several items on the menu. Truffle oil flavors the delicate, towering goat-cheese soufflé and wafts up from cups of crisp, truffle-drizzled fries. But its most luxurious use might be in the house Mac and Cheese: The kitchen dresses the comfort food with the gourmet triumvirate of bacon, lobster and truffles for a gooey combination that would make most hedonists blush.
The transporting bistro can feel like a quick trip across the Atlantic, but it’s also an ideal spot to look out for New York’s A-listers. After all, Madonna, Anna Wintour and Gwyneth Paltrow have all stopped in to brush up on their French accents.
