Casual Italian By Way of the Amalfi Coast

Highlights

  • During spring and summer months, time your dinner reservation or evening cocktails to take in the sun setting over the harbor.
  • Salads here are fresh and balanced; the Peperina's tissue-thin slices of pear and generous shavings of Grana Padano cheese make for a palette opening sweet-savory bite.
  • Pay close attention to the daily specials, particularly fish dishes like salmon ceviche and yellow fin tuna.

Good to Know

  • The outdoor patio dining space can be rented out for special events and seats up to 130 for dinner.
  • Though outdoor dining is one of the main draws, the restaurant has indoor seating and is open year round.
  • The Friday evening summer drum circle at Wagner Park and the occasional wandering tourist may impede your view or disrupt dinner conversation.

Full Overview

Tucked away at the Southern tip of Manhattan, away from the hustle of Wall Street, Gigino at Wagner Park boasts al fresco dining with views of Lady Liberty. Though it’s a different coastal scene than that of his native Positano, Chef Luigi Celentano brings his seashore sensibility to this relaxed Italian spot. There's something about enjoying seafood by the water that just makes it taste better (even if it is the Hudson River). The Cozze al Gorgonzola is an exercise in restraint; steamed black mussels arrive in a broth so light and creamy, you'll want to drink it straight from the bowl. If you're torn between seafood and pasta -- most are homemade -- ask for the off-menu Zuppa di Pesce: a mix of mussels, shrimp, salmon and tuna dished up in a light tomato broth punctuated by rings of al dente calamorata, so named for their calamari-like shape. Linger for dessert and the view. Keep things light with a selection of sorbetti and gelati, or indulge in a slice of Torta di Mandorle, a warm, buttery chocolate almond torte. Cap off the meal with a small glass of Limoncello, an Italian lemon liqueur traditionally served as a digestivo.
