Full Overview

Todd English has been a celebrated figure on New York culinary scene since he opened an outpost of his beloved Boston restaurant, Olives, in the W Hotel in Union Square to rave reviews. Recently renovated under the direction of executive chef Patrick Malone, the swanky space is still a draw for the beautiful set who linger over interesting cocktails (try the Heart Beet or Peaches and Dream) at Olives’ bar, just off the W’s lobby. Aromas from the open-air kitchen mix with the lively din of diners in a tasteful, high-ceilinged dining room, filled with a mix of banquettes, tables and cocktail tables. Chef English has always delivered consistent Mediterranean fare, and his latest menu doesn’t disappoint. Broken into sections that include small plates, salads, flatbreads and tarts, salads, pasta, and large plates, Olives can truly tailor to any palate. For starters, we highly recommend the decadent Crispy Carpetbaggers, or fried oysters with beef carpaccio and truffle mash potatoes, a play on traditional surf and turf. For table sharing, be sure to order a flatbread like the fig and prosciutto with rosemary and Gorgonzola. English recently partnered with Chilean Olive Oil, and the poached halibut with cauliflower puree is a beautifully executed dish featuring the olive oil drizzled over a generous piece of fish. Feeling more carnivorous? Try the bone-in ribeye with fries. Though there are only a few pasta options, all are excellent. The Crab Carbonara is a shellfish-laden version of a classic, while the Tortelli of Butternut Squash has been a staple on the Olives menu since it first opened. Though servings are generous, be sure to save room for dessert. Olives’ cookie plate, which features fresh-baked goodies from oatmeal cookies to red velvet cupcakes, is the way to finish strong.
