Full Overview

Porcini, a mainstay Philadelphia BYOB since 1996, is a staple of Italian excellence on quaint Sansom Street, just blocks away from Rittenhouse Square.  Owner/Maitre’d David Sansone greets customers at the door of this 1840s historic coach house as if they are family, inducing laughter well before he’s even recited their amazing daily specials. The comforting setting (classics like Louis Prima and Frank Sinatra, play in the background) make guests feel like they’re eating in someone’s personal dining room. Keeping with the familial theme, David’s brother, Owner/Executive Chef Steven Sansone, steps out from behind the kitchen to chat with diners. With these brothers in charge, everything is handmade fresh, including authentic pasta – from large, plump ravioli to delicate gnocchi. Even Porcini’s herbs are organic, grown on their rooftop and tended to by Chef Sansone. Grilled Spanish octopus and baby calamari are served warm off the grill, tender, with lemon, caper, olive oil and Gaeta olive marinade atop fresh greens. Juicy, Barolo-braised osso bucco falls off the bone atop luscious risotto. For dessert, the Italian puff pastry is layered with cream and Italian custard, and tiramisu is loaded with classic coffee liqueur. This is the kind of BYOB that diners really connect with; they leave eager to return for more fine food and family familiarity.
