Full Overview
As adventurous as food in Philadelphia has become, especially in the popular Midtown Village restaurant scene, our collective appetite for uncomplicated pizza and pasta remains voracious. Spiga, a sibling restaurant to the elegant and enduring La Castagne on Chestnut Street, aims to satisfy the hunger for these carby comforts with a menu of wood-fired pies, fried appetizers galore, panini “sliders” and (of course) classic pasta dishes.
The room, clad in exposed brick and reclaimed wood, is just as appealing as the Italian-inspired plates. The wood-burning stove can be seen flickering from the long dining room as it fills the space with the toasty, smoky aromas of pizza that’s served freckled on its underside with charred spots. Unlike so many other restaurants in this neighborhood, tables aren’t piled on top of each other but spaced comfortably to allow a private conversation.
Prices will also make you feel at ease. They are so reasonable, in fact, you may want to order something from every part of the menu. Be sure to try the gnocchi bathed in a savory garlic-scented mushroom cream sauce. The pizzas—cooked in 90 seconds thanks to the scorching hot brick oven—are also worth the indulgence.
With good happy hour specials, a long list of specialty cocktails, and some fine draft beers, Spiga is an attractive candidate for a low-key drink and snack after work. Try the crispy goat cheese served with a puree of sweet beets or the shoestring fries drizzled with Parmesan cream.
