Full Overview

Don’t let the name fool you: there’s more than Mexico’s beloved spirit at Tequilas, and with close to 100 unique bottles, that’s saying a lot. There’s the space itself -- a mansion-sized brownstone adorned with elaborate moldings and quirky, colorful murals. It still feels cozy despite the vast, ornate interior that’s divided into three separate rooms. There are cans of Tecate here, but there’s also a multi-page cocktail menu that would impress even the most discerning mixologist. There’s a friendly staff ready to help you put any remaining high-school Spanish skills to good use. But most importantly, there’s the food. Looking at the menu, you’ll find no Tex-Mex here. This eatery is all about pure Mexican fare, and that’s the way it’s been here for 25 years and counting. What you will find is authenticity—and lengthy menu descriptions highlighting the cultural or historical significance of various dishes. From the traditional mole poblano (if you like mole, you’re in for a treat) and cochinita pibil to enchiladas playa, which are tortillas stuffed with crabmeat and shrimp, topped with a creamy poblano and chipotle sauce, there's a fish, meat or poultry dish for every taste. Yes, there are white tablecloths here, but Tequilas caters to all types and occasions: You’ll find groups of friends at the bar gathered for a jug of happy hour margaritas as well as couples to celebrating their anniversary – even executives sealing deals over ceviche and mango-topped grouper. Just don’t blush when your waiter arrives at the table carrying your margarita on his head. And get your business deals in writing—the drinks are strong.
