A Taste of Paris in Philadelphia

Highlights

  • Place your order two days in advance to take advantage of the antique duck press, which is wielded tableside to create a show-stopping meal for two, available Tuesday - Thursday. (In the summer, lobsters are put take the place of the fowl.)
  • A cheese and charcuterie board features both local and imported meats and fromage, along with the don’t-miss terrine du jour.

Good to Know

  • There is no bar seating – nor waiting area – in the petite space, so reservations are a very good idea.
  • In addition to the dozen wines by the glass on the menu, there are often special add-ons available, listed on the chalkboard with the soup and desserts of the day.

Full Overview

When you’re yearning for a touch of romance, there's nothing quite like a trip to Paris. Don’t have the means to hop across the Atlantic this weekend? Head instead to this petite Wash West bistro, where you’ll find authentic French dining in comforting style. The second restaurant from “Master Chef of France” Oliver Desaintmartin (he also runs Caribou Cafe), Zinc offers a concise menu of Gallic faves that are relaxed but well appointed, just like the cozy, 40-seat room. Beneath a tin ceiling and beside exposed brick walls, a 1919 zinc bar runs along the back, creating the staging area for well-mixed apertifs and flawlessly pulled espressos. In between the drinks, classics like escargots and chicken liver mousse are executed with flair, turning rich French treats into easy-eating delights. Chef de cuisine Nanina Scriber worked previously for Alain Ducasse, and her skill is apparent in entrées like seasonal seafood meunière (look for skate wing, or perhaps salmon) and a lamb shank cassoulet. Be sure to save room for dessert, as a changing menu of sweet decadence awaits, from dense chocolate pot de creme with fresh whipped cream to frozen nougat, house made and drizzled with hot caramel and berries. Bravo, Monsieur Desaintmartin, bravo.
